- ⅓ cup chopped onion (113 g)
- 5 tablespoons butter or margarine (75 g)
- 5 tablespoons all-purpose flour (75 g)
- 1¼ teaspoons salt (6.25 g)
- ½ teaspoon pepper (2.5 g)
- 5 cups milk (1,200 ml)
- 6 cups thinly sliced potatoes (1,050 g)
- In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt butter and sauté onion until tender.
- Stir in flour, salt and pepper until well blended. Gradually add milk, and then bring to a boil, constantly stirring for 2 minutes or until sauce is thickened.
- Place half of the potatoes in a greased 3 quart baking dish. Pour half of the sauce over potatoes. Make another layer with the remaining potatoes and sauce.
- Bake the potatoes, uncovered, at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 60-70 minutes or until tender and top is lightly browned.
- Serve immediately and enjoy.
